Learning an American Pronunciation? Three Tips For You

If you are learning an American pronunciation, there are a lot of things you can do to speed up your learning process. It’s likely that you are already fluent in English, but you feel that your pronunciation is a problem for you – when for example some people can’t understand you or you want to be understood better. Here are three tips to help you improve your pronunciation.

1. Exposure
If you live in North America, that’s great. You have a lot of opportunities to work on your pronunciation. Talk with as many people as you can. If you don’t live in North America, you should watch as many American movies as you can. Pay close attention to how speakers pronounce certain sounds and try to imitate them. That’s how you picked up the accent in your mother tongue – by imitating.

2. Assess your pronunciation
If you want to find out your pronunciation mistakes, record yourself while reading something aloud. You can also get help from a professional accent trainer or a speech pathologist. Assess your pronunciation and then focus on correcting the most serious mistakes.

3. Live through American English
As simple as it sounds, it’s a very powerful tip. Speak as much as you can – live through the English language. You can read aloud, speak in English with your friends (I’m pretty sure you know some people that speak English), sing along. There are many opportunities to work on your accent if you simply decide to live through American English.

While you can’t learn a new accent in a week, you can definitely improve a lot in a matter of a few months. So, practice regularly and practice often. Good luck!
