How to Find a Language Pen Pal

Looking for a language partner? Where can you find a language pen pal? What is the best way to learn with a pen pal? This article will answer these questions! I’m going to show you three sites on which you can find a pen pal and some tips on how to learn with a pen pal. Here are the sites!

1. Livemocha

Livemocha is a community for language learners. There are many free language courses and there are thousands of people interested in learning and teaching languages. It’s very easy to find a language partner there or even a private tutor.

2. Polyglot Learn Language

Polyglot Learn Language has a huge base of members. At the time I’m writing this article, their number exceeds 262 000. This site is strictly for people looking for pen pals. There’s a chat room and a message board. What’s more, you can look for an event near your location and meet with other language learners.

3. Lang-8

Lang-8 is a very useful site if you want to improve your writing skills. Once you sign up, you can write short journal entries and have them proofread by native speakers. It’s a great feature, but there’s something more to it: you can easily find a language partner there! There are many groups for people interested in different languages and a lot of these people are looking for a pen pal.

The best part – all of these sites are free!

If you are looking for some tips on how to learn with a language partner, here they are:

1. Write often

Okay, maybe not a few times a day but it’s definitely a good idea to write frequently. It’s better to write something new each day than once in a week since it’s easier to memorize something if it is exposed to you more frequently.

2. Right language partner

It’s always better to learn a foreign language with a native speaker than someone who is fluent in it but is not a native speaker. Also, make sure that you are learning the right dialect (for example Brazilian Portuguese differs from European Portuguese).

3. Don’t be shy

Learning languages is all about communication. Don’t be shy – write to your pen pal as if you were talking to your friend. Only by this way can you learn real, spoken language.
Learning languages should be fun. That’s why learning with a language pen pal is a great idea. Good luck and have fun while learning!
