SunGard Higher Education Helps Four Customers Win $4.4 Million in TRIO Grants

Four SunGard Higher Education customer institutions were awarded TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grants from the U.S. Department of Education during recent funding competition, earning the two community colleges and two universities a total of $4.4 million. SunGard Higher Education’s Services team helped successfully apply for the grants.

The goal of TRIO SSS grants is to increase the retention and graduation rates of primarily low income and first generation college students. SunGard institutions each receiving $1.1 million awards in this cycle were: Ocean County College, Saint Clair County Community College, Sul Ross State University, and University of Bridgeport. SunGard Services staff is helping a fifth customer institution, Rio Hondo Community College District, manage its two SSS grant awards totaling $2.2 million.

Grants Services from SunGard helps institutions identify alternative funding opportunities that match institutional goals and priorities, complete the application and proposal processes, and/or manage compliance and evaluation for awarded funds. If funds are awarded, the institutions can focus on strategic improvements with greater confidence of stable, predictable funding.

“TRIO grants are very competitive and operate a little differently than most other grants,” said Fred Weiss, senior vice president of strategy and portfolio management at SunGard Higher Education. “Since previous recipients have preferential scoring credit, it is extremely difficult for first-time applicants to win a TRIO award. Three of the institutions that we helped were first-time applicants.”

In applying for grants, Mr. Weiss said they help institutions gather and analyze the data on their students. “SSS grants have very specific requirements and expect institutions to be able to gather and interpret data for the full five years of the grant cycle. We help our customers think beyond what they need to do to receive the grant, and into how they are going to implement and manage it over the full five years.”
